Celebrating World Doula Week: Empowering Families and Birth Professionals Worldwide

World Doula Week (WDW) is a global celebration of doulas and their essential role in supporting families during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. This week-long initiative highlights the invaluable impact doulas have on the health and well-being of mothers, babies, and families. Let’s dive into the origins, purpose, and ways you can get involved in this wonderful celebration!

What is World Doula Week?

World Doula Week began in Israel in 2011 as the first Doula Day, which took place on March 22. The initiative was started by Ruti Karni Horowitz, an entrepreneur passionate about promoting the work of doulas. She proposed the idea of creating a special day to recognize the work of doulas, and it was met with great enthusiasm. Recognizing the importance of the event, the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA) joined forces with Horowitz, and it was quickly agreed that this celebration should not be limited to a single organization. Instead, the movement would expand to include doulas and doula organizations from all over the world.

The Purpose of World Doula Week

World Doula Week aims to empower doulas globally by raising awareness of the many benefits their work provides for families. By improving the physiological, social, emotional, and psychological health of women, newborns, and families, doulas make an extraordinary impact during both labor and the postpartum period.

Over the course of the week, events and activities are held across the world to showcase the positive influence doulas have on birth outcomes. Here are just a few of the benefits that the presence of a doula can bring:

  • Reduces the incidence of c-sections
  • Increases new parents' confidence in caring for their newborns
  • May shorten the length of labor
  • Reduces requests for epidurals and analgesics
  • Promotes breastfeeding initiation and continuation
  • Enhances a mother’s satisfaction with her birth experience
  • Lowers the incidence of postpartum mood disorders

Doulas are an integral part of the birthing process, offering emotional, physical, and informational support to mothers and families. Whether you're looking to learn more about their work or celebrate their impact, World Doula Week is the perfect time to do so!

When is World Doula Week?

World Doula Week kicks off with World Doula Day on March 22 and runs through March 28 each year. March 22 was specifically chosen because it coincides with the spring equinox, a symbol of renewal and fertility in many cultures around the world. This date represents the return of new life, making it a fitting tribute to the role of doulas in supporting the birth of new families.
